North Cyprus Property Resolution In recent elections in North Cyprus, the previous government was re-elected by a substantial majority, a result confidently predicted by the www.Sonnetto.com.
In a parallel election to the above, Mehmet Ali Talat was voted in as the new president, replacing retiring leader Rauf Denktash, who was a dominant figure on the island's political stage for more than half a century. Mr Talat, a supporter of the island's reunification, is currently prime minister of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. He won 55.6% of the vote, well ahead of his nearest rival, Dervis Eroglu, with just 22.7%.
Mr Talat is a keen pro-European and has lobbied hard for the reunification of the island of Cyprus. His election is likely to radically alter politics in Cyprus and North Cyprus. As he cast his vote, he underlined his determination to find a solution to the island's divisions. "Today is a turning point," he said. "We have to solve the Cyprus problem. We have to do this with the Greek Cypriot community."
Although Turkish Cypriots voted overwhelmingly in favour of a United Nations-brokered reunification plan last year, Greek Cypriots in the south of the island remain firmly opposed to the UN plan. They hope Turkey will be forced to make further concessions on Cyprus before it can begin EU accession negotiations in October.
Congratulations for North Cyprus “The United States congratulates Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat on his victory in the Turkish Cypriot elections”, State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said in a statement. "Turkish Cypriots exercised their right to select the leader of their community in free, fair and democratic elections. The United States welcomes this reaffirmation by Turkish Cypriots of their commitment to a comprehensive solution and reunification of the island. We look forward to working with all interested parties to this end," the statement said. Mr Talat's victory was also welcomed by the EU,which has played an important role in trying to resolve the Cyprus issue since the island joined the bloc a year ago.
The European Commission said in a statement that Mr Talat's success should speed the resumption of talks, and promised a 'rapid' unblocking of EU aid together with preferential trade terms for the northern part of Cyprus. The election result "confirms the strong desire of the Turkish Cypriot community for reunification and full integration into the EU," said the statement. "The commission expects this result to create favourable conditions for a resumption of talks, under the aegis of the UN, to seek a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue," it said. This should serve well for investors in North Cyprus Property. |
